Today, there are so many products on the market to help us keep our teeth and mouths clean, we almost have no excuse for having dental issues. Unfortunately, however, dental problems and gum disease run rampant through our societies. This is because of two seemingly uncontrollable factors, genetics and poverty. Healthy teeth and gums can come from the right care and possible gum surgery as long as you can afford the products and do not have to fight the families mouth disease.

There are different forms of surgery that can be performed on the mouth. Periodontitis is the most severe gum disease that you can have and if it is not taken care of or cannot be controlled and eliminated by the use of antibiotics or scaling, a surgical procedure will probably be the only option left.

Some pockets that form in the mouth between the teeth and gums are surgically repaired through a procedure known as Gingivectomy. Normally, an oral surgeon or specialist will perform this procedure.

Gum disease can affect the bones in the jaw. There is a procedure that oral surgeons and specialists will perform that cleans out the gums and repairs that damage.

Post-surgical procedures should always be followed, even if they make you uncomfortable. You should never smoke or use spitting tobacco after having mouth surgery as this is very dirty and counterproductive. The last thing you want is an infection in your mouth. You must keep the areas clean. Finish the course of antibiotics that you will most likely be given. Not taking the medications to the end of the prescribed time can open you body to infections. A mouth infection or blood infection is not something you will want to put yourself at risk for.

Gum surgery may include having to have stitches removed or allowing grafts to heal. Grafts are pieces of healthy tissue that are transferred from one place in the mouth to another to promote healing. Be sure to keep all of your follow up appointments to make sure that the procedure was a success.
