There are different types of California accounting jobs to choose from that differ in salary and hours worked each week. Even though there are many positions open the competition is stiff for work in the larger firms where the pay is higher. Of course with higher pay comes longer working hours and some would say a higher stress filled work environment.
In addition to having a degree from a reputable school one also has to have a lot of experience in order to land a coveted position at a top firm. In order to work at a large firm expect to work long hours because large firms expect a lot out of their associates. Many large firms have showers, gymnasium, and sleeping quarters for their employees because many associates spend long hours at the office.
Small to medium sized companies that have their own accountant staff do not require the same amount of devotion to work as the large firms but also do not pay as well. But many in a California accounting job prefer working forty hours each week for lesser wages than some accountants who like to work long hours at a prestigious accountant firm. There are many companies that need accountants and are not so much interested in degrees from large schools as much as an accountant's competence and work ethic.
Almost all accountants who work in a small or medium sized company work forty hours per week normally. Sometimes, such as during tax season, the accountant will work over time, but this is the exception rather than the rule. The trade off is money related in that the accountant working in the small to medium sized company will not earn as high an annual salary as the accountant working for a large firm.
Large accountant firms handle business financial records for several large companies which is why there is always work to do for the associates who might handle three or four large companies simultaneously. Some accountants thrive with such a heavy workload and welcome the challenge of a stress filled work environment. The accountant working at a small to medium sized company only has her company's books to account for so when the work is done it is time to go home.
California accounting jobs are increasing each year because business increases each year. The accountant can work for a large firm if she has the background and qualifications large firms look for. Other accountants are happy to work for a small to medium sized company because the hours are shorter even if the pay is lower.
