Former speaker of the House of Representatives Newt Gingrich is one of the first to throw his hat into the ring of what will soon be a hotly contested republican primary. As of this day the Gingrich campaign is establishing a website and setting up an exploratory committee. An official announcement of candidacy is expected within the next week or several days. Well known for his wit and intellectualism Newt Gingrich has a powerful name in American politics and over his tenure has gathered the support of many Americans who identify as conservative republicans. Moreover Newt has been in politics for many years which provides him with a wealth of donors he can tap into for his primary and presidential run.
Gingrich will have to face some questions about electability from both democrats and republicans because of his past moral faults. The former speaker has been married three times and it was reported that he was having an affair on his first wife while she was battling cancer. Newt was confronted with the issue of his two divorces during a speaking event at the University of Pennsylvania and owned up to his faults in the past. He said that God is forgiving and if citizens want to look to the past then as president he would be irrelevant. However he said, if citizens are willing to look to the future then he will be ready to have that debate.
Newt is a die hard fiscal conservative and has been speaking out on the financial problems America through his commentary on fox news, interviews and speeches across the nation. He believes that when politicians get tax payers money they see it as their own personal spending money. Gingrich has said he would like to make major changes to the bureaucracies in America by getting rid of them entirely and have instead free market enterprises that manage finances in a more productive manner.
Gingrich a Baptist since graduate school recently converted to Catholicism in 2009. He holds strong socially conservative values such as supporting the gay marriage bans and capital punishment. He believes abortion should be made illegal and doctors who perform abortions should be penalized by law. A little over a year ago Gingrich spoke at a conference in Palm Beach Florida and described how the Supreme Court has been overstretching its powers dictating law that affects the constitution. He thinks the constitution should be protected in its original meaning and advocated quite briefly to essentially throw out some of the Supreme Court justices. Another issue of concern to conservatives is their gun rights; Newt opposes gun control and any government interference on gun ownership.
The latest polls show Newt Gingrich to be at 9% amongst favorite republican candidates. Mike Huckabee and Mitt Romney are currently leading the "Preferred Republican Presidential Nominee" Gallup poll at 18% each. Sarah Palin is a close third at 16%. However, because Newt is one of the first to make his bid for president he will have a head start over the other candidates for the 2012 republican primary.
