It is hard to think about accommodation in Torquay, without recalling the BBC TV series, "Fawlty Towers", written by John Cleese. The manic character of Basil Fawlty, played by Cleese himself, was based on real-life Torquay hotelier Donald Sinclair, whose repressed and snobbish behavior had been noticed by Cleese and the Monty Python team, who were staying at his hotel while shooting a film in the area.
Torquay lies on the so-called English Riviera, which is part of the Channel coast of South Devon. The weather here is warmer and sunnier than in most other parts of the UK, and palm trees grow quite readily. Torquay faces east towards Tor Bay, which is a part of the larger Lyme Bay.
There are three resort towns on the English Riviera, all with their own distinct character. Torquay is the most trendy and cosmopolitan of the three, whereas Paignton is perhaps more suited for family holidays, and Brixham is a rather quaint and attractive old fishing village.
South Devon's English Riviera is just 22 miles long, so those who are staying in Torquay can easily visit Brixham or Paignton on a day trip. Those who enjoy travel on heritage railways may also consider taking a journey on the Dartmouth Steam Railway.
This railway is a former branch of the Great Western Railway, and it runs from Paignton on Torbay, down to Kingswear, which is on the River Dart, just opposite to the larger resort of Dartmouth. The railway operates daily from March to October. There are also Santa Specials in December. Ferry crossing to Dartmouth is included in the ticket price.
Accommodation in Torquay is quite easy to find. For bed and breakfast accommodation it can be worthwhile trying the official tourist board website (Enjoy England), and either searching online, or ordering a copy of their annual guide. Those who wish to take their "best friend" with them, can choose the "Pets Come Too" guide to pet-friendly hotels and B&Bs.
