Have you ever been hurt? I have. In fact, we all have. But let me ask you a question. If you were a Christian or person of faith and you came home one night and walked in on your spouse being intimate with a person of the same sex, how would you react?
That is what happened to me 11 years ago. It devasted me emotionally and spiritually. It destroyed life as I knew it. I tell you this, not to garner sympathy but to let you understand I know what it is like to struggle with unforgiveness and bitterness. It can eat away at the very core of your being.
Over the years I have some very important lessons about forgiveness that I want to share with you. Lessons that will change your life if you allow them too. I am going to share with you the devastating effects of bitterness and unforgiveness and the life changing and liberating effects of when you finally learn how to forgive.
Bitterness will destroy your life. It will cause you to be angry, depressed, closed off, unfriendly, and hurtful. You will end up alienating friends, family and anyone you might have a romantic interest in. Nobody wants to hang around an unforgiving and bitter person. They are the biggest kill joy out there. Instead of being the life of a party, they are the death of one. Have you ever hung around a person who was so one tracked in their thinking that all they ever did was complain? That is a person with unforgiveness!
On the other hand, when you learn to forgive, you lose all need to think, talk, or dwell on what happened anymore. Wouldn't you like to be that way? Where what happened to you does not control your thought life and speech patterns? I have learned 3 very important principles about forgiveness.
1. Forgiveness is like a bank charging off an uncollectable debt. It was owed, but the person couldn't pay, so the bank wrote it off.
2. Until we know how much we have needed forgiveness in the past, we will never be able to be gracious enough to forgive in the present.
3. The ultimate source of forgiveness both in our need to be forgiven, and the power to forgive, comes not from within ourselves, but ultimately comes from God.
