A chopping board in the kitchen is almost an absolute needed accessory and the majority of people choose a butcher block chopping board for their work. But since these are made from natural wood and in a normal case not sealed, they can change shape, crack or even warp due to change in seasons or improper care. They must always be kept dry and away from heat to make them last for as long as you want them. If a problem does occur, a few quick fixes can take care of most things.

Sometimes butcher blocks can warp and this is due to the imbalance of moisture content between the top and the bottom. To fix this, oil applied to the concave side is needed. If the problem has been ongoing and not fixed immediately upon notice, taping plastic to the arched side and oiling the reverse side daily will help get in back in shape.

The edges may crack and you'll notice splitting in the board from a lack of oil or because of excessive exposure to heat occurs. When that occurs, small splits can be expected and most of the time it doesn't need fixing as it is a cosmetic condition. But you can fill in splits with wood filler. After you fill in a split, let the filler dry and sand off any excess and re-oil the board.

When food or liquid remains on a board for too long it can cause staining. When that occurs some sanding with lightweight sandpaper should be used and then re-oiling the board. Over time the stain will disappear into the wood grain till it is no longer noticeable.

Dents and gouges - It is natural to have some dents and gouges in a wood chopping block and if the cutting is done evenly over the entire surface it will wear evenly. If chopping is done continuously in the same place, a problem can occur. To take care of that problem, some light sanding is usually all that is necessary, and then some oil.

There are a few problems that are because of the natural wood coloring and repair isn't needed, like dark streaks in wood. Something like that just adds a bit of character to the block. When proper care and maintenance is used, a butcher block can last a lifetime. Even when problems do occur, these quick fixes will have it back in shape fast.
Author Resource:- If you enjoy cooking, then the butcher block is something you need. Nearly everyone has a butcher block in their kitchen, do you?
