When travelling overseas it is important to research the principles of food and drinking water in the countries you intend to visit to avoid being struck down with food poisoning.
There are a number of ways to protect yourself from bacteria found in uncooked foods and water in other countries, that our bodies are not used to, which result in us falling ill.
Contaminated food and drink are among the worst offenders for travel-related illnesses, resulting in the most common side effect - diarrhoea. Foods that we need to be cautious of to avoid food poisoning abroad include:
Salad - grown close to the ground, this can easily become contaminated
Vegetables - If they are unwashed, cleaned with tap water, or cannot be peeled, avoid them.
Buffets - food that has left to stand in cool temperatures and uncovered for a long period should be bypassed.
Milk and milk products - a haven for bacteria that our bodies may not be used too
Seafood and shellfish - if these are undercooked, eating them can result in very serious illness
Food from street vendors - avoid this, unless it is clearly cooked in front of you
Water and other drinks are also a main problem with falling ill on holiday. There are ways to treat water to make it safer, but avoiding the following drinks will be helpful:
Tap water - most resorts will advise whether the tap water is safe to drink, but stick to bottled water to be sure
Bottled water - safe to drink, but ensure that the seal around the lid has not been broken, as bottles are refilled with tap water in some places
Ice - nice in our drinks on hot days, but the ice could be made from contaminated water
Fizzy drinks, beer and wine are safe. Hot drinks are too, providing the water has been boiled and is not simply hot water from a tap
Compensation claims from people who get food poisoning abroad are difficult to prove, so it is always best to play it safe with your food and drink.
