As we are moving deeper and deeper in the digital era, a large number of important documents are now digital and no matter what you do to protect them, unless you have backup copies there is always the possibility of data loss. If you have never lost important files in the past you should consider yourself lucky. Hardware failures, viruses, corrupted software installations or even theft are all common causes of data loss. Everyone who has ever lost even just a few important data knows how many troubles and frustration such a loss can cause.

In the past the most common way of backing up files and data was using storage devices like external hard disks drives and USB flash disks. However, these devices are not immune to hardware failures and although using them is definitely a step in the right direction they don'y offer a full proof solution. The good news is that, with the improvement of Internet speeds, the decline of the storage prices per GB, the ever increasing power of computers and the development of cloud computing, today we have another practical solution. This solution is Online backup and storage of our precious files.

The benefits of this solution are many. Firstly, because our files are stored in networks of servers even if one server fails our data are still safe. We don't have to worry about hardware failure ever again. Additionally, by storing your files online you can access them from anywhere as long as you have an Internet connection. This feature is great if you constantly work on different computers or if you want to share your files with friends or people you work with. One more noteworthy feature is that in most cases you don't have to schedule backups since they are done automatically, so even if you forget to backup your files that is taken care for you.

The obvious next question is, how secure are my online backups? All serious cloud storage providers offer encryption for the uploaded files, so that means that your data are secure. If you are worried about this, it is better to choose a big trusted company like Amazon or Google. A good way to try some of the services available is to get a free plan (a lot of companies are offering a few GB for free) or at least a free trial first and see if it works for you. Keeping your files safe will eventually save you from lots of troubles and distress and even expenses.
