When starting jewellery making as a new hobby the potential user is faced with a massive range of tools to choose from. How do you decide which to purchase? What are the basic tools needed to get started?

This article hopes to simply get you started on what is a great and potentially profitable hobby!

When buying pliers for jewellery making the first choice must be to buy tools specifically designed for the hobby. General pliers found in hardware shops are not suitable. Always purchase the best tools available within your budget as cheap tools are generally cheap for a reason.

As a general guide tools produced in the Far East will be of lower quality than those produced in Pakistan or India.

So what tools do you need to start? In reality 3 tools will suffice. A round nose plier, chain nose plier and sidecutter.

Round nose pliers are a specialszed plier characterised by their rounded, tapering jaws. They are most commonly used for creating loops in pieces of wire. A common use would be to make a loop on a headpin when making a drop for a pair of earrings.

Chain-nosed pliers are flat on the side of the plier's nose and a little curved or rounded on the outside. They have a multiple of uses and might, for example, be used to open and close jump rings when adding a clasp or to flatten a crimp bead.

Finally a sidecutter is required to enable the hobbiest to cut wire, headpins etc to the correct length.

In addition to the three main tools detailed above there are a multitude of more specialised tools. More details can be found by visiting the information pages on our website.
