Belonging to genus Bacillus, the Bacillus Coagulans are species of bacteria that form lactic acid. It was in 1932 when such organism was first separated and described by Horowitz-Walssowa and Nowotelnow in the fifth edition of Bergey’s Manual of Determinative Bacteriology. During that time, Coagulans was categorized as spore-forming lactobacillus.

In 1939, however, the organisms was transferred to Bacillus and reclassified as such in the 7th edition of Bergey’s. Scientists used DNA-based technology to differentiate the two species, which both have similarity in morphology, physiology and biochemical aspects.

Considered as beneficial bacteria, the Coagulans are defined by World Health Organization as live microorganisms, also known as Probiotics, that when consumed in sufficient amount can bring health benefits to the host. Among the health benefits that you can get from Coagulans include improved immune system and a good digestive system.

By taking Probiotics supplements daily, you are ensuring that your intestinal balance and immune system are sound and safe. Factors like stress, age, poor diet, antibiotic uses, medications, and travel can reduce the levels of your beneficial bacteria and disturb your intestinal balance. People who suffer from diarrhea including rotavial in children, traveler’s diarrhea, and those which are caused by antibiotics can find relief from Bacillus Coagulans.

Other conditions such as digestion problems, inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn’s disease, Clostridium difficile colitis, and ulcerative colitis will be relieved by Probiotics. Relief is also experience by individuals who experience infections caused by ulcer-carrying bacterium Helicobacter pylori and excessive growth of bad bacteria in short bowel syndrome.

Even respiratory infections cannot stand up to Coagulans. In some cases, the good organism can prevent certain cancer or prevent cancer-forming agents. There is research conducted about Coagulan’s potential benefits in cancer, as an additive to vaccines to make them more effective.

Also, the good bacteria produce the L optical isomer of lactic acid. Once inside, they easily colonize the intestine, enhancing its defense against any attack of bad bacteria. They are capable of surviving the acidity of the stomach and this allow them to reach the intestinal tract. The Coagulans are so strong that there is no need for them to be refrigerated.

While there are many other good bacteria being studies and promoted by scientists, the Coagulans are covered by a natural protective shield, enabling the organism to survive the pressure of manufacturing process, the heat, and the acid in the stomach, in order to reach the intestines, as their intended destination. All other bacteria do not posses such unique characteristics.

Admittedly, while there is no enough information to explain how Coagulans work once they reach the intestines, there have been no cases reported that the organisms bring harm to the host. In studies conducted in animals, the good organisms manifested good results.

One thing that must be borne in mind, and that is, if you take any western medications, it is best to consult your physician about taking any Bacillus Coagulans supplements or beverages.
