First, Kevin breaks off for some fun in the Balboa Fun Zone. The result is fun, of course. We see Kev discover the kids' games, cheat at them, and do a few other things we like to watch. Ok, really we like to watch him wrestle with a life jacket. It does not look like he won. Watch for yourself. Fortunately, an adult intervened to save the life jacket.
In the game room with the whack-a-mole, we have video evidence of Kev crossing the line to cheat at the bowling game. Good thing the kids to do what we do. On the other hand, his rewards were awfully small. Do you know the little trinkets one gets with "won" coupons (or tickets) at arcade fun centers? Some carnivals have the same thing. Kev gets the most amazing catch. Watch the video and judge it by the expression on his face.
Boat rental or trips are a big activity around Balboa peninsula. There is a routine site seeing tour at Balboa Boat Rentals where tourists can see the bay, nice houses, and the pretty ferris wheel. For human powered water travel, paddle boats are common. The ones that resemble bicycles are common, but those seeking exercise will want the boat that resembles a surfboard and is propelled by a paddle. I have never done that myself, but it looks like an adventure to "walk" or paddle on water
For regular bicycle rentals, visit Seaside bikes on Balboa Pier where Stephanie Valencia shows off the usual bicycles (with 2 wheels), tricycles for adults, and four-wheeled peddled bikes that can fit six adults. We all have seen Hollywood images of bicyclists on boardwalks and along beaches in California. Those are real. The roller bladders are less common here.
Newport Landing is one of the more upscale restaurants in the area. You should repeat that last sentence. All of Newport Beach is upscale. The food is very photogenic.
For whale watching, visit Newport Landing Sport Fishing on their boat, the Western Pride. Watch the whales intently, though. The whales are also watching you. I think that the region is a tourist destination for whales who want to watch the strange land mammals. You do know that you are a strange land mammal, right? The whales might be fishing which you can do too. The boats also host line fishing from the boats, so you can join the whales in what we think is one of their favorite activities.
If you don't want to fish, the harbor also harbors Gondola rides with Gondola adventures. This is appealing since sport fishing is slightly less romantic than gondola rides and the gondoliers are equipped to make romantic moments more so.
Newport Harbor Nautical Museum has the usual things that you would expect at a museum and a touch tank. What is a "touch tank" you ask? It is a tank of water into which you reach in and touch sea creatures. That sounds slimy and fun, doesn't it? Sorry, I repeat myself.
Staella Gianakakos gives a tour of the Catalina Flyer catamaran. It is a comfortable ride out to Catalina Island which is the big island seen on maps near Southern California.
